Y11 Fine Art - 35mm Photography

(Posted on 21/11/22)
This term our Y13 Photography students went to Y11 Fine Art classes to share their learning with GCSE students. They led 35mm photography workshops and then helped the Y11 students to edit their best photographs. Y11s were able to bring in objects and collections of their choice to photograph. Here is what some of them thought of it:
"In my photography project, the theme I chose was cricket. I was using a 35mm lens to blur the items that were furthest away from the camera. I used multiple tools and effects to create my edits, one of which being the burn tool which darkened the shadows and made them more predominant. I liked creating these shots because they make the colours in the front of the image more vibrant compared to the blurred colours in the back of the image. I enjoyed doing this project because it allowed me to create a different kind of artwork. If I were to repeat this project, I would change the colour on the light wand to emphasise the colours on the kit."
- Ciaran Inchley, 11L1
"In the photography I learned positioning and photo editing skills that benefitted my knowledge in photography as a whole. It was enjoyable and inspiring to learn the basics of photoshop editing, like using tools such as blur and sharpening. Also, learning how to prepare and position the camera when taking a photo was interesting. The Sixth Formers were very helpful in teaching us and it was pleasant having them help us to solve the problems we had with the process. As my subject I chose deodorants."
- Riley Sharp, 11BA1
"I enjoyed photography because of the freedom I had. I brought in rocks and fossils that I have collected myself. I could choose where to put them and what colour light to shine on them to give my shot an interesting look. It was a different experience from painting and drawing. When it came to editing, I liked how you could completely change the way an image looked and remove the impurities in the photo. Luke Sturgess showed me how to add a gradient and to increase contrast. In Photoshop, you can always undo what you don’t like."
- Thomas Little, 11K2
"I found photography very enjoyable and eye opening because it opened up me up to new experiences and hobbies that I could pursue in my life. It was quite hard and confusing at first, but I soon found I was enjoying myself doing it. It was very helpful of the Sixth Formers to share their skills and teach me how to do it. As my subject I choose deodorant bottles."
