Course Description
If you like the idea of taking a language further, then A-level French is for you. It is a two-year Advanced level course that aims to provide a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study, which will develop a deep interest in and an enthusiasm for language learning. It provides the opportunity to communicate effectively in an increasingly accessible global context, as well as develop an awareness and understanding of contemporary society, heritage, literature and cultural background.
You will study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will also study highlights of French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music, cinema and literature, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the French-speaking world.
You will explore the influence of the past on the present-day French-speaking communities. Throughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences, which have shaped them.
Finally, you will employ critical analysis and thinking skills in the study of literary texts and film as well as having the opportunity to carry out independent research in an area of your choice.
Assessment tasks will be varied and encompass listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, to be executed in the summer of Year 13.

Further study: Many universities offer the opportunity to study French in conjunction with a wide variety of other subjects. French is a facilitating subject for university entry.
Careers: French can be used in a wide range of occupations, such as translation, management, commerce, education, tourism, resource management, to name just a few.
