Course Description

If you like the idea of taking a language further then A-level German is for you. A-level German is a two-year Advanced Level course and is an excellent opportunity for students to gain an additional qualification beyond GCSE.

The aim of the A-level course is to provide a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study, which will forge a deep interest in and an enthusiasm for language learning. It provides the opportunity to communicate effectively within an increasingly European context, as well as to develop an awareness and understanding of contemporary society, heritage and cultural background.

You will study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will also study highlights of German-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the German-speaking world.

You will explore the influence of the past on present-day German-speaking communities. Throughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of German-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Finally, you will employ critical analysis and thinking skills in the study of literary texts and film as well as having the opportunity to carry out independent research in an area of your choice.

Assessment tasks will be varied and encompass listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to be executed in the summer of Year 13.
